Why we built a budgeting app for expats

Managing money across countries should not require a spreadsheet. Finch was built by an expat who needed something better.

Finch was born from a problem my wife and I faced ourselves. Like many families, we had a complicated spreadsheet to manage our finances. What we discovered was that even after all the work we put in to make it flawless, we still could not answer a very simple question: "Are we moving closer or further from our financial goals?" Our spreadsheet could tell us generally where we were going, but it took a massive effort to get it even remotely close.

So we ventured into the world of budgeting apps. What we found was that most apps are reasonably priced between $5 and $15 a month — but only if you lock in for an annual contract. If you just wanted to try one out for a month, the prices jumped much higher. It felt counter-intuitive for budgeting apps to gouge their own users.

That frustration became Finch. We built the app we wished existed — an automatic budgeting app that gives you a clean birds-eye view of your finances without the spreadsheet. It connects to banks in multiple countries, handles currency conversion automatically, and shows you exactly where your money is going. No annual contracts. No hidden fees. Just clarity.

Our values as a finance app

Transparency

No hidden fees, no surprise charges, no data selling. You pay $5/month and that is it. We make money when you find the app useful, not by monetizing your data.

Community-Driven

We want Finch to be shaped by what you need, not by what looks good on a marketing page. Features are submitted and voted on by real users through our public feedback board. The loudest voice in the room is always the community.

Privacy-First

Finch uses Open Banking with read-only access — we never see or store your bank login credentials. We only receive the minimal data needed to help you understand your finances, and we will never sell your financial information.
